Frequently Asked Questions

What's special about SuperFeast?

At SuperFeast, we think about health differently. We aren't interested in fads, and we turn to nature for guidance and healing. We believe that health starts in the home and that vitality is everyone's birthright. That plants and fungi are allies on our journey towards our utmost potential. We really love tonic herbs and medicinal mushrooms. We take them every day. We fell in love with them, they transformed us, and we decided to share them with the world. We partner with diligent and ethical people in communities that care about the quality and integrity of the herbs. We extract with care. Our products are all 10:1 extracts, no additives or fillers, and Third Party Tested. We use premium packaging to ensure the herbs have longevity. And we love what we do.

We also respect and honour the lineage of Daoist herbalism that has provided us with a path to walk and a map of the body/mind/soul, both energetically and physically, which has allowed us to expand our consciousness. We continue to study and learn from this tradition and are incredibly grateful for the many Masters, gurus, teachers, students, scholars, alchemists, somanauts and adventurers who have contributed to our understanding of this wisdom.

What is a tonic herb?

Tonic herbs were first mentioned in Emperor Shen Nong's Classic of Herbal Medicine, the Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing, around 2,000 years ago. This text (also known as the Divine Farmer's Materia Medica) was a culmination of thousands of years of traditional herbal wisdom from the many healers in ancient China. It may or may not have been written by a man with a see-through belly. The lore is fascinating! Many well-known herbs feature in Shen Nong's text, and he classifies herbs according to three distinct categories:

Superior herbs (also known as imperial herbs) - these are the herbs that can be consumed daily with benefits accumulating over time. They were used daily by the wisest and wealthiest people, including the Emperors. These are the ones we love to work with. We call them tonic herbs. Or Daoist tonic herbs, if we're being specific, though some Ayurvedic and Western herbs are also tonic.

Regular herbs - these are the herbs that can treat the ailing. These herbs should not be used for an extended period as there is a potential for long-term negative side effects.

Inferior herbs - these herbs are primarily considered to be toxic. Inferior herbs should only be used for a short period to get a powerful and fast result when treating a serious illness acutely.

Tonic herbs are not a trend. Their medicinal use is grounded in thousands of years of empirical evidence. As the safety and efficacy of tonic herbs

are beginning to be acknowledged by modern science, we are simply

confirming the effects ancient herbalists monitored over thousands of

years of practice.

By definition, a tonic herb:

  • must not cause harm or place additional stress on the body
  • must promote healing within the body via a non-specific action
  • must be adaptive in nature, assisting the body to overcome any physical, psychological or environmental stressors.

What is a medicinal mushroom?

Medicinal mushrooms (still technically herbs!) are unmatched in their ability to build immunity and adaptability within the body and are among some of the world's most prized tonic herbs (see above).

Some famous medicinal mushrooms are also great culinary mushrooms - think shiitake - but many are difficult to consume in their raw form. For this reason, they were (and continue to be) extracted, to maximise their medicinal value. Different extraction methods yield different compounds - see our FAQs on extracting herbs for more details. Generally, a mushroom extract will provide a more concentrated and cost-effective way of consuming the mushrooms (compared to purchasing the ground mushroom and extracting it yourself). At SuperFeast, it takes 10 kilograms of dried mushroom to produce 1 kilogram of medicinal mushroom extract powder.

In the wild, medicinal mushrooms are tree-dwelling. Many species tend to favour the wood of the particular trees, and the trees, in turn, lend the mushrooms some of their medicinal compounds. For example, Chaga thrives on the very medicinal and magical birch tree; we sustainably source our Chaga wild from birch forests in China. Our reishi we grow cultivated Di Dao on wild oak due to the limited availability of wild reishi. Oak is another unique medicinal tree, and choosing oak-grown reishi allows us to access that tree-medicine via the mushrooms. Choosing only wood-grown mushrooms enables us to supply you with a product with the most robust and adaptive medicinal profile possible. Our intention and focus for all our SuperFeast products is to provide the best quality, most potent herbs grown in a sustainable way, aligned with nature.

Many other companies, nearly all who occupy the market today, supply medicinal mushrooms that are grown on a cereal medium, usually a grain such as rice or oats. It's cheap, but it produces poor quality mushrooms. Some argue that these products are higher in beta-glucans and polysaccharides. We recommend trying them for yourself. We have found them to be less effective and to contain less Qi than properly grown mushrooms. There are some great companies out there who are doing outstanding work. If you're not purchasing SuperFeast products, ask your mushroom supplier how they grow their mushrooms, on what medium, and how they extract, and that will give you a sense of the type of quality you are getting.

Do you sell magic mushrooms?

Medicinal mushrooms are magic in the way that they allow their medicine to unfold within the body; however, they are NOT magic mushrooms (the psychedelic kind Timothy Leary was into). A super cool and exciting field of research is emerging that suggests that these varieties of mushrooms can be beneficial medicinally. And obviously, these mushrooms have a rich and sacred history, especially in Mesoamerica. We sponsor Mind Medicine Australia to support this research. At SuperFeast, we’re interested in Daoist Tonic Herbalism, so this is what we place our focus on.

What is the difference between a herbal extract and a dried herb?

We often get confused customers asking why they can access dried herbs so much cheaper than our extracts. We understand the confusion! When you're purchasing a herb, unless you plan to extract it yourself (and we do highly recommend getting into home herbalism, as many amazing medicinal products can be crafted in the home), generally, you're better off purchasing an extract or tincture as you're going to use a small amount to get the most potent medicinal effects. Especially if the plant is very tough/fibrous (like ashwagandha, reishi, chaga, etc.), extracts are far more efficient and effective. Your body cannot digest the tough material that these herbs are composed of.

To extract means to pull or to draw out. Applying this concept to plant materials such as tonic herbs and medicinal mushrooms essentially describes the process used to obtain the compounds responsible for the herb's therapeutic profile. The resultant extract is generally more bio-available for the end-user than the original herb.

These compounds are generally extracted using a solvent such as water or alcohol. We use both of these mediums to extract our herbs, singularly and together. Each method is beneficial, and its use is dependent on the particular active constituent/s we wish to extract.

Alcohol is used to draw out the fat-soluble components of the herbs, such as bitter compounds and alkaloids. Water is used to obtain the herbs' immune-boosting starches and proteins, tannins, astringents, etc. Some herbs contain active constituents that are both fat- and water-soluble; this is where we bring in the dual-extraction method (see What is a dual-extract? FAQ). Both water and alcohol are used to acquire the herb's full medicinal profile with a dual-extract. When extracting our herbs, we use quality spring water and organic non-GMO rice alcohol; this ensures a product that is both full-bodied and potent.

To simplify: If you've ever had a herbal tincture from the naturopath, you're taking an alcohol extract; if you've ever boiled herbs in hot water for a long time or even made a herbal tea, you've had a water extract. Those sweet tinctures you take sometimes are often made from glycerine, which is an alcohol-free way of getting some of those fat-soluble compounds. Don't worry about the use of alcohol in our products - we evaporate it off, which is one of the benefits of an extract powder instead of a tincture. No alcohol residue!

We deliberately choose to only work with herbal extract powders instead of selling un-extracted ground dried herbs. The basis of a herbal extract is a dried herb (fruiting body, root, stem or flower, or animal part) that is usually ground or chopped to increase the available surface area for extraction.

We use extracts for their convenience and medicinal potency - a little goes a long way. While we believe herbalism is a craft that belongs to the people of the world, not to pharmaceutical companies, we also find many of our customers don't have time to produce their own herbal extracts in this modern age. However, we do highly recommend exploring DIY extracts if you're keen! There are some excellent books and courses out there on home herbalism.

Our commercially produced extracts are extracted at a 10:1 ratio; 10kgs of the herb is reduced into a 1kg concentrate, then dried and sifted to make a uniform powder, which is packaged here in Mullumbimby or on our TGA facility in Sydney. Our herbs have a 2-year shelf life and are not heat sensitive; you can add them to hot or cold foods and beverages.

We wholeheartedly believe the kitchen is the heart of the home and feel herbs extracted in this way can be easily integrated into the daily diet. Traditionally tonic herbs were incorporated in a similar way, primarily taken in teas and culinary dishes throughout the day. Start small - extracts are concentrated and potent, and you don't need a lot to manifest a powerful shift in your energetic and physical reality.

What is a dual-extract?

A dual-extract is a method of processing a herb to make it more bioavailable to the human or animal consuming it. Both water and alcohol are used to acquire the herb's full medicinal profile with a dual-extract. When extracting our herbs, we use quality spring water and organic non-GMO rice alcohol; this ensures a full-bodied and potent product. Water (also known as the universal solvent) extracts the water-soluble components of the herb (makes sense!). Alcohol is a more selective solvent; it extracts the fat-soluble compounds and other compounds like the bitter constituents of the plant, the alkaloids and essential oils, etc. Many herbs only need water extraction - and some prefer dual-extraction. You'll see which type of extract we've used on the product pages of our individual herbs and blends.

What is Miron glass?

Miron glass only allows ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) light to penetrate. In the Daoist and Yogic traditions, violet light is thought to express the highest vibrational frequency of all the colours (720 – 770 billion Hertz), corresponding precisely to the vibration frequency of our central nervous system. Research shows that products stored in Miron glass are exceptionally well-preserved, enriched, and protected against degradation for up to three years. How’s that for longevity! We highly encourage you to save and reuse or repurpose your Miron glass jars.

How do I contact SuperFeast?

You can call us (yes, it will be answered by a real person from our Mullumbimby office) - 888 694 1103. Otherwise, shoot us an email hello@superfeast.com or try our social media accounts @superfeast on Instagram or via Facebook.

Are your products keto/FODMAP-friendly/paleo etc?

In our opinion, herbs are as about as paleo as it gets. They're ancient medicines, and they've been used for millennia to help humans and animals stay vital. So yeah, our herbs are paleo. We don't use grain starches or fillers, so you can be sure our products are grain-free, and while we use organic rice alcohol to extract our dual-extracts, most paleo folk consider that a non-issue. Decide for yourself.

Our capsules utilise bamboo extract and organic non-GMO sweet potato (Reishi, JING, M8) or Leucine & colloidal anhydrous silica (ashwagandha capsules) to enhance the slip factor required for encapsulation - these are the most natural excipients we can source, and they're really high quality. No crappy GMO cornstarch for us.

As a general rule, the dose of our products is so small that it will not affect any special diet that you are on. That said, some people are extra sensitive and would be wise to avoid glucose, FODMAPs, lectins, etc. It's best to confirm with your practitioner or expert in your particular diet if you have any concerns about adding our products to your routine.

Products containing berry/fruit extracts (e.g. goji, longan) may contain FODMAPs and small amounts of glucose. Again, your level of sensitivity will determine how appropriate these products are for you.

Are your products gluten-free?

Yes, all our products are gluten-free.

Are your products vegan?

The only non-vegan products we sell are SHEN (pearl powder) and Deer Antler extract. The rest of our range is vegan.

Do you standardise your products/test for active constituents?

We do not standardise our products, nor do we focus on isolated compounds. We believe in the medicinal value of the whole herb. While it's common for a herb to become famous for a specific compound, we believe that science is only just starting to scrape the surface of what is possible when we align ourselves with our plant allies. There are many unidentified and likely potent compounds in many herbs; we don't see a reason not to trust in nature's intelligence in packaging them up in a herb.

We use traditional extraction methods to ensure that the full range of medicinal compounds and energetic qualities are extracted from our herbs.

We feel this results in a potent product that is just as nature intended. We never synthetically isolate, manipulate or standardise our herbs for particular active constituents.

We do test our herbs to ensure that certain active compounds are naturally present at levels compliant with the minimum requirements established by the Chinese Pharmacopeia; in this regard, therapeutic effects are guaranteed.

How pure are your herbs? Do you test them?

We don’t just sell these herbs, we take these herbs, we give them to our families, we give them to our friends. Therefore we only focus on producing products of the highest quality and purity. This is our mission, burning passion and deep desire with SuperFeast. To ensure this quality is upheld, our herbs go through a series of rigorous testing.

We test all our products, in both China and Australia. Every ingredient must meet stringent quality standards. These quality standards are part of good manufacturing practices (GMP), which apply to all TGA-listed medicines in Australia, as well as our own standards around quality and sourcing.

We obtain Certificates of Analysis (CoAs) for all our products from our manufacturer in China and/or our TGA registration process (if the product is listed with the TGA). We also obtain fingerprint chromatography for each of our herbs; this ensures each herb is correctly identified as the species we want to work with (eg. to ensure our red reishi is Ganoderma lucidum, not some other species).

In Australia, we test at two TGA approved facilities for the following: herbicides, organochlorine (OC) pesticides, carbamates, organophosphate (OP) pesticides, synthetic pyrethroids, fungicides, etc, heavy metals (lead, copper, mercury, etc), yeasts, moulds, bacteria, and other microbials.

How are your herbal extracts dried and powdered?

After extracting our herbs in either water or water and alcohol (for a dual-extraction), the concentrated liquid extract is dried using an ultra-high-speed spray dryer. During this process, the herbal liquid concentrate is atomised into fine droplets, which are thrown radially into a moving stream of hot gas. The temperature of the droplets is immediately increased and fine droplets become dried instantaneously.

The whole drying process is completed in just a few seconds, ensuring herbal potency is retained at the maximum level. In the spray drying process, heat and mass transfer while drying occurs in the air, protecting the vapour films surrounding the extract, preventing it from being damaged by the heat. This protective envelope of vapour keeps the particle at saturation temperature. As long as the particle does not become “bone-dry”, evaporation is still taking place and the temperature of the solids will not approach the dryer temperature. This is why many heat-sensitive products can be spray-dried easily at relatively high temperatures. The herbal extracts are then sifted through a fine mesh, to achieve a uniform consistency to the final product.

How are your herbs packed?

SuperFeast tonic herbs are packed by hand, with love, in our Mullumbimby warehouse by an epic bunch of (super) humans or in our TGA facility in Sydney. We use ultraviolet Miron glass jars to store our herbs, this preserves the integrity of the herb by protecting it from the entire visible light spectrum.

Our herbs are also available in bulk Kraft bags for those of you who wish to refill or share a larger volume of herbs with your families (and save some money). Our kraft bags are made of mix of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) (no BPA), metalised polyester (MET PET foil lining) and kraft paper.

We have trialled several more sustainable options however we have found that materials made of natural fibres have a shorter shelf life than our herbs. The journey continues!

SuperFeast herbs are packed by weight, not volume and each herb has its own unique profile. Some of the herbs are dense, while others are lighter. This may result in a variance of the space the herbs can occupy in each jar. For example, Neural Nectar and Beauty Blend, are denser in nature and will settle at a lower volume in your Miron jar or Kraft bag. Whereas Astragalus and Lion's Mane are fluffy and light, and will therefore take up more surface area, which results in their volume appearing fuller in your Miron jar or Kraft bag.

Do you offer samples?

At this time, we do not have samples available. We have not been able to find a sustainable way to offer samples that also preserves the quality of our herbs.
